Abstract
Background :
@EN Microalbuminuia is considered to be a marker of incipient diabetic nephropathy in insulin-and non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. In addition, microalbuminuria is associated with increased cardiovascular mortality in
non-insulin-dependent
diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). This study was undertaken to know the clinical significance of the microalbuminuria in NIDDM patients without diabetic retinopathy.
@ES Methods :
@EN Two hundred two normoalbuminuric and thirty five microalbuminuric NIDDM patients without retinopathy whose duration of diabetes, was less than 5 years were included in the study. The clinical characteristics of microalubuminuric NIDDM
patients
were
determined according to a premade protocol.
@ES Results :
@EN 1) Current and maximal body mass index was higher in microalbuminuric group compared with normoalbuminuric group.
2) The prevalence of hypertension, systolic and diastolic BP was higher in microalbuminuric group.
3) The HDL-cholesterol concentration was lower and the triglyceride concentration was higher in microalbuminuric group.
@ES Conclusion :
@EN Microalbuminuria in NIDDM patients without retinopathy is associated with hypertension, obesity, high triglyceride, and low HDL-cholesterol concentrations which are considered to be risk factors of cardiovascular disease. These results
suggest
that
microalbuminuria may be a feature of syndrome X.
